Anna Wilmott is a water-soluble oil painter exploring non-hierarchical relationships and push-and-pull forces within landscapes. Inspired by walks through Bath, she depicts trees, shrubs, flowers and aged structures, including stone walls and ornate ironwork. Influenced by photographer Thomas Struth’s use of series, Wilmott experiments with focal points, vantage, depth and flatness, transforming fleeting phone photographs into intimate paintings. Chromatic underpaintings, expressive mark-making and precise detail heighten their physicality, while vivid colour, saturation and light evoke season, atmosphere and memory. Drawing on Sue Wales and Impressionists such as Joaquín Sorolla, her ongoing series celebrates everyday encounters, place and serendipity.
